Body Contouring After Weight Loss

If you've lost weight and now have loose skin around your body, Dr. Proffitt can help you improve your appearance. Body contouring includes cosmetic surgery procedures that reposition and tighten sagging skin that has failed to contract after weight reduction.

Mobile plastic surgeon Dr. Randy Proffitt is trained in body contouring techniques that help patients who have lost weight after bariatric surgery or intense diet and exercise regimens.

Who's the Right Candidate for Body Contouring?

Weight loss is a very rewarding experience. However, it can also bring changes that you did not expect. Loose skin can become a problem on areas such as the:

  • Arms
  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Back
  • Thighs

Men and women who have undergone successful gastric band or gastric bypass procedures are often good candidates for body contouring. A good body contouring candidate is healthy and has reached a stable weight.

Your Body Contouring Consultation in Mobile

During a visit to our Mobile, Alabama plastic surgery practice, Dr. Proffitt can answer your questions about body contouring. You can review photos from previous surgeries, and discuss the details of each procedure. Dr. Proffitt can help determine which, if any, procedures will be beneficial. Some of the common procedures involved include tummy tuck, buttock lift, body lift, breast lift, and other skin-tightening procedures.

How Body Contouring Works

After the skin stretches during weight gain, it does not always shrink once your body mass decreases. Using tissue removal techniques (known as excision) and liposuction, Dr. Proffitt can help improve your body shape. The surgery works by getting rid of excess skin and stubborn fat deposits on the abdomen, back, arms, thighs and/or buttocks. Body contouring can be done in stages. It is typically performed with a general anesthetic.

After Body Contouring

Body contouring will often involve multiple procedures spaced months to years apart, so the length and nature of the recovery period varies. Dr. Proffitt will work with you to create a surgical plan that takes into account your particular needs.

Most patients can expect to spend at least 2-3 weeks recovering following each surgical session. An elastic compression garment will need to be worn for several weeks to promote skin contraction and reduce swelling in treated area. After six weeks, most activities can be resumed.
