Brow Lift

(Forehead Lift)

Every year more than 40,000 men and women have a brow lift, which is also known as a forehead lift. A brow lift or forehead lift is designed for people who have wrinkles, lines and loose skin involving the forehead and brow. As the brows fall over time or if genetics have left you with brows in a lowered than desired position, a brow lift may be the answer. Dr. Proffitt may recommend a brow lift when a patient exhibits:

  • Frown lines
  • Drooping or low set brow
  • Crow’s feet
  • Horizontal lines and furrows
  • Loose upper eyelid skin that cannot be completely corrected with a blepharoplasty

A Brow Lift may be combined with a blepharoplasty. A consultation is necessary to determine if a brow lift is right for you. Your consultation with Dr. Proffitt will include watching a DVD from the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgery) on brow lifts, and a thorough examination that also incorporates a detailed history. You will also be able to view before and after photos.

Will Insurance Pay for a Brow Lift?

A brow lift is considered a cosmetic procedure and therefore not covered by insurance.

How is a Brow Lift Performed?

Dr. Proffitt may use one of three different techniques.

  • Coronal

A coronal brow lift involves an incision in the scalp behind the hairline. The skin of the forehead and brow are released so they can be elevated to a more youthful position. The underlying muscles are also removed to help smooth the wrinkles.

  • Endoscopic

An endoscopic brow lift is less invasive and utilizes 5 small incisions just behind the hairline.   This method leaves fewer scars than a coronal lift. Special endoscopic equipment is necessary.

  • Frontal Hairline Incision

A hairline approach is a similar to the coronal but the incision is along the hairline. This approach is best for persons with a high forehead who don’t want their hairline raised higher.

All techniques raise the brows, smooth wrinkles and frequently elevate the upper eyelid skin as well. Dr. Proffitt usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours complete a brow lift.

Where is the Surgery Performed?

Dr. Proffitt performs brow lifts at an outpatient surgery center under either local or general anesthesia. Anesthesia is administered under the direct supervision of a board certified anesthesiologist.

What is the Recovery Time?

You should expect bruising and swelling in the forehead and the eyes which usually subsides after one week. Sutures are removed at one week and most normal activities can be resumed at this time. Any strenuous activities should wait for 3 weeks.

Risks

Bruising and swelling usually resolve in 1-3 weeks. Asymmetry and weakness of forehead musculature may occur but is usually temporary. Numbness of forehead and scalp also may be a temporary sequelae.

What Will My Results Be?

A more youthful appearance with a smooth forehead and brow. You may also have less sagging or loose skin of the upper eyelid.
