Surgery to Enhance Facial Balance
Anatomically-shaped facial implants can enhance contours of your face, to improve facial proportion. Here in Mobile, Dr. Proffitt may recommend a facial implant to augment areas such as the cheekbones, chin, or jawline.
Facial implant surgery is frequently combined with other plastic surgery procedures, including facelift, rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery.
Who’s the Right Candidate for Facial Implants?
There are many possible applications for a facial implant. You should consider this procedure if you are bothered by:
- A weak chin
- Undefined jawline
- Inadequate cheekbones
- Thin lips
By augmenting these areas with an implant, you can make a significant improvement in overall balance of the facial features. Many people can benefit from a prominent chin, stronger cheekbones, a defined jawline and full lips. However, to be considered for facial implant surgery, you should be healthy, a non-smoker, and have a realistic view of what the outcome will be.
Your Facial Surgery Consultation in Mobile
In a consultation, Dr. Proffitt can determine if you are a good candidate for a facial implant. He will evaluate your facial appearance, your goals for surgery, and other details about your medical history. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share concerns. Before and after photos can also be reviewed to help you understand the typical outcome of facial implant surgery.
How Facial Implants Work
Facial implants come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. After choosing the proper implant, Dr. Proffitt will proceed with your surgery. This surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. You will be given a general anesthetic, meaning you will remain asleep during the surgery.
Surgery varies depending on your goals. Most facial implant surgeries can be completed within two hours, and some are as brief as 30 minutes. Surgical incisions are often made under the chin or within the mouth, so that scars remain concealed. The doctor places the implant beneath the tissue and secures it in place.
After Facial Implant Surgery
Sutures inside the mouth will dissolve on their own after a week or two, while most non-dissolving sutures will be removed by the doctor within a week of the surgery. Facial implant surgery is usually performed at an outpatient facility, and you will be given a general anesthetic by a board certified anesthesiologist so that you will remain asleep during the surgery.
A few hours after surgery, you will be able to return home, but you might need someone to drive you home and help you around the house for a couple of days. Bruising, swelling, and mild pain are normal during this time. We will provide specific post-operative instructions to follow, including steps for reducing swelling, taking prescription pain medication, eating a soft diet, and oral hygiene.
Results are subtle, so you may find that people notice your improved appearance without actually noticing the augmentation or implants. You should be able to return to work in about one week, but Dr. Proffitt may advise you to avoid rigorous activities for up to six weeks.
