Cosmetic Contouring of the Neck
The neck can often exhibit sagging skin and unwanted fat. These are normal signs of the aging process, but may also be caused by genetic factors and lifestyle choices.
Fortunately, there are plastic surgery options to improve appearance of your neck. A neck lift is one way Dr. Proffit can reverse those unwanted neck conditions and help you achieve a more youthful appearance.
Who’s the Right Candidate for a Neck Lift?
While a facelift may correct some sagging and wrinkles in the neck, a neck lift, also known as cervicoplasty or platsymaplasty, is specialized to correct the tissue and muscle that may hang in the area below your chin.
If you have the following neck conditions, you may benefit from this procedure:
- Drooping neck tissues
- “Turkey Gobbler” Looking Neck
- Bands in the neck
- Excess fat on the neck
As with any cosmetic surgery, you should maintain realistic expectations for the outcome. Good candidates are healthy, non-smokers, who are highly motivated to improve their appearance. While neck contouring may be similar across genders, the aesthetic goals may greatly differ in women and men. These technical details can be discussed with Dr. Proffitt during your consultation in Mobile.
Your Neck Lift Consultation in Mobile
If you’re considering a neck lift, it’s best to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options. During a consultation at our Mobile Alabama practice, Dr. Proffitt can educate you about the risks, benefits and expected outcome of neck lift surgery.
How a Neck Lift Works
For your surgery, which may last one to two hours, you will likely be placed under a general anesthetic, though a local anesthetic with sedation may be used in some cases. Dr. Proffitt will begin by making an incision from the front of your earlobe, around the back of your ear into your hairline. During the procedure, as necessary he will remove excess fatty tissue and work with the underlying prominent neck muscle, the platysma, to attain your cosmetic goals. He will then close the incisions with sutures and cover them with a dressing and tape.
Lifting and tightening the neck can have better results when combined with a facelift.
After Your Neck Lift
After neck lift surgery, you will be advised to keep your head elevated. The doctor provides compression garments, which are typically worn for up to three weeks. It may take up until the time you remove the compression strap before you can realize the final results of your neck lift surgery. The day after your surgery, you will be able to shower and wash your hair. Follow Dr. Proffitt’s specific instructions for your recovery period.
